LANGUAGE IN AZERBIJAN
More than 30 million Azerbaijani people in Iran speak the Azerbaijani language as their first language. Millions of people from Azerbaijan live in Russia, the United States, Turkey, and Western Europe. Even though Azerbaijanis have lived in separate countries for a long time, they can still understand each other easily no matter where they are from. Currently, there are over 50 million people who speak Azerbaijani worldwide.
Based on how languages are related to each other, Azerbaijani is part of the Turkic language group, specifically the Oghuz branch. It is closely related to Turkic, Turkmen, and Gagauz languages, forming a group of Turkic languages in the southwest.
According to how languages are usually categorized, the Azerbaijani language is considered an agglutinative language. Azerbaijani language is like other languages in its group. But unlike some languages, it has its own specific meanings for words and grammar. In Azerbaijani, the grammar meanings and connections are always shown through clear suffixes following the root and stem of the word.
The Turks, who were the ethnic group that made up the Azerbaijani people, started coming to the area that is now Azerbaijan a long time ago. They were joined by many other tribes from different backgrounds. Together, these people became the first inhabitants of the land. The creation of the Azerbaijan language, which comes from Turkish, and the people who speak it took a very long time, lasting for many centuries. As more Turkic tribes became part of the population and had more influence in economics, politics, and culture, the language evolved and different ethnic groups came together to form a nation that shared the same cultural, spiritual, and religious beliefs.
Azerbaijan language is a very old written language that has changed a lot over time. If we consider the language of the “Kitabi-Dada Gorgud” epics as a spoken form of our written language, then the language we use today for communication can be considered more than 1300 years old. The history of the written language of Azerbaijan began in the 13th century, based on the information we have.
The Azerbaijani language has gone through two main stages of development in its almost 800 years of existence. The first period, known as the old period, goes from the 13th century to the 18th century. The second period, which we can call the new period, goes from the 18th century until now.
The area where the first period of the Azerbaijani literary language was used varied in size. This language was used by the rulers and soldiers of the Azerbaijani states like Jalayirs, Garagoyunlus, Aghgoyunlus, Safavids. It was also used as a written language in Central Asia. The Azerbaijani language used during this period is different from the one used in the new period, both in terms of non-language related features and unique language characteristics.
In the early years, the Azerbaijani language contained a lot of Arabic and Persian words. During that time, the way people spoke and wrote was different, especially when it came to poetry. This caused a lot of new words from other languages to be used in our writing. During the second period, a new style of poetry called realist school emerged. This style of writing, known as realism, became popular and led to the development of a new creative method. As a result, writers stopped using words borrowed from other languages that were not commonly used in our own language.
In addition, some words from the old Azerbaijani literary language that were also used in the Ottoman language (shimdi, shoyla, shu, kendi, etc.) had no purpose anymore in the new period. This happened when the differences in Turkish literary languages completely disappeared.
The periods also have noticeable differences in how they sound. So, the new time is marked by the settling down of the Azerbaijani literary language and the sounds used in words. The equal number of consonants and vowels, like the letters h, q, and x, which is seen in the first part, also leads to the first letters winning (o and h).
There is a similar situation in grammar. The first-period pronouns -yi, -yı, -yu, -yü // – ni, -ni, -nu, -nü are not the same in the second period. The -iser verb ending helps give its function to the -acaq or -acek suffix in the future tense.
In old Azerbaijani language, word combinations mostly had a structure similar to Arabic and Persian languages. For example, they used phrases like “flower season” or “abandonment of the way of love”. The descriptive word comes after the designated word in these phrases. In Azerbaijani language, the second period is different. They always use the definite article before nouns.
In the first period, there were more sentences where a main sentence had another sentence inside it. In the new period, there were more sentences with verb adjectives instead of this type.
